A relegation dogfight ended in stalemate as Futera’s lacklustre performance saw them fortunate to escape with a 1–1 draw against bottom-of-the-table Singburi Warriors at a rain-soaked Bangkok University Stadium.
A match of huge significance kicked off amid a tense atmosphere, with both Futera and Singburi still searching for their first win of the season. Futera made a dream start inside three minutes when, after Singburi failed to clear a corner, Ball delivered a deep cross that was met by Bas, whose downward header found the corner of the net to give the hosts an early lead. Moments later, John Oweri had the chance to double the advantage, but his powerful effort struck the side-netting.
Despite the early setback, Singburi forced their way back into the game, with the home side struggling to gain a foothold. After several near misses, the visitors finally found the equaliser ten minutes before half-time. Poor defending allowed the Singburi striker time to fire off a shot that Film could only parry into the path of an onrushing midfielder, who calmly slotted home to make it 1–1. Singburi were now in the ascendency and should have taken the lead before the break when, once again, slack Futera defending saw the ball fall kindly to the striker — but he completely missed his kick with the goal at his mercy.
With seconds remaining in the first half, Futera launched a swift counter-attack. After John Oweri’s miscontrol, the ball fell to Phu, whose outstanding volley flew inches over the bar.
The second half resembled a basketball match, with both sides pushing for the goal that would secure a precious three points. Singburi rattled the Futera crossbar from a well-worked free-kick before a slick move involving Drew and Beem saw Pup’s effort well saved by the visitors’ goalkeeper. In the 77th minute, Singburi thought they had taken the lead when a long-range free-kick was parried by Film into the path of an onrushing midfielder, who fired home the rebound. However, their jubilant celebrations were cut short by the linesman’s flag, ruling the goal offside — though television replays showed it was clearly onside.
After Film almost gifted a goal by fumbling a long-range effort, more questionable officiating saw the linesman flag for offside after Phu’s clever through ball found Drew clean through on goal. The final kick of the game saw Beem fire high and wide from the edge of the box, leaving the final score at 1–1.
It was an incredibly disappointing afternoon for Futera, who failed to capitalise on their dream start, producing a tepid performance devoid of any real passion or intensity. It’s clear that several players are not at the level required for this division. The foreign signings continue to underperform, with Tsubasa and Power particularly poor. I feel for John, who is clearly struggling with a nasty foot injury that’s causing him discomfort. With the winter transfer window approaching, this will be a pivotal moment in Futera’s history — the club simply must get its signings right.
For me, the only players who have performed consistently and shown they can cope with T3 standards are skipper Bas, leading from the front; Heng, with his outstanding energy; Kao, strong and willing to fight for everything; and young Drew, a class above. Beem has shone in moments and is clearly talented — we need more from him. I think Ton is a decent centre-back, and Phu has played himself back into form. As for the rest of the squad, I’m not so sure.
Another massive game is on the horizon as we take on Saraburi United in another six-pointer. Let’s all get behind the team and make sure this incredible journey continues in T3. Futera su su!
