Saraburi United 1-0 Futera United

Futera United slumped to a second successive defeat after a disappointing performance against bottom side Saraburi United, who claimed only their second win of the campaign with a narrow 1–0 victory. Futera will rue two clear-cut chances that went begging, missed opportunities that ultimately proved costly as the hosts held firm to secure all three points.

The visitors should have taken the lead inside five minutes after good work from Phu produced a perfect cross for Heng, who, with the goal at his mercy from six yards out, somehow headed wide to the disbelief of the travelling Futera supporters.

Moments later Saraburi could easily have gone ahead when Futera’s midfielders failed to track their runners, allowing a free header on goal that drifted narrowly wide. A poor game with little real quality on show was littered with misplaced passes from both sides, with the atrocious playing surface doing little to help the flow of the match.

With half-time approaching, Saraburi took the lead after Park lost possession, allowing the home side to launch a swift counter-attack. With Futera’s defence caught out of shape, Saraburi’s winger cut inside from the left flank before unleashing a low shot that found the bottom corner, leaving Film rooted to the spot. The referee soon brought an extremely disappointing first half for Futera to a close, with the home side holding a slender 1–0 advantage.

Futera showed signs of improvement after the break following the introduction of John Owoeri, with Song dropping deeper to support the midfield. Moving the ball more quickly and with greater purpose, Futera began to force Saraburi onto the back foot, but the home side’s defence held firm. Song looked particularly dangerous and went close with a fierce angled drive that flew inches wide.

A moment of madness from Film almost allowed Saraburi to double their lead. The keeper came rushing out of his goal, allowing the Saraburi forward to lift the ball over him, but Khun was on hand to produce an outstanding goal-line clearance.

With ten minutes remaining Futera should have equalised. Substitute Guy burst down the right flank before delivering a perfect cross onto the head of John Owoeri, who inexplicably headed over when it seemed easier to score.

That proved to be Futera’s final chance, and the game ended with a 1–0 victory for bottom-placed Saraburi.

It was a bitterly disappointing performance from Futera, one that echoed some of the dismal displays from earlier in the season. One has to ask whether some players have taken their foot off the gas after confirming safety from relegation. Let’s not sugar-coat it, this performance was simply not acceptable against a Saraburi side currently propping up the table.

The performance lacked intensity, urgency and heart. Our midfield, without the experience of Champ or Khun, looked particularly weak, and at times struggled to cope with even basic pressure. At this level, that simply is not good enough.

Our inability to keep hold of the ball was equally concerning. Time and again possession was given away cheaply, inviting Saraburi to come forward. One moment in the first half summed up the entire performance. Film took an age over a goal kick when urgency was needed to take the game to the bottom club, only to then kick the ball straight into touch.

With two games remaining we need to see a reaction from this team. Defeats can be accepted in football, but the manner of this performance cannot. The players must show far greater commitment, intensity and pride in the shirt if Futera are to finish the season on a positive note.
