Runaway league leaders Prime Bangkok arrived at Bangkok University Stadium on the back of five straight wins, looking to strengthen their grip at the top of the table. Instead, they were held to a 1–1 draw by a spirited Futera United side who, on another day, might well have snatched all three points.
With Champ nursing a slight knock, young PSW graduate Dew was given the chance to make his first full start of the season. A cagey opening saw both sides probing for an opening, but both defences stood firm.
Approaching the 20-minute mark, the game sprang into life. Prime went close first when a cross from the right flank was blazed over from inside the six-yard box, with the goal at the midfielder’s mercy. Futera responded immediately when Phu ghosted past three defenders before unleashing a fierce angled drive that the Prime goalkeeper did well to keep out.
Futera should have taken the lead on 30 minutes when Heng caused confusion inside the Prime box, allowing Beem to deliver a sublime cross that John Oweri volleyed into the ground and wide.
Moments later, the league leaders edged ahead when an angled through ball caught out Futera’s centre-backs, allowing the Prime centre-forward the chance to fire home. The referee brought an eventful first half to a close with Prime holding a slender lead.
Futera began the second half eager to get back on level terms and pushed Prime back. In the 62nd minute, their efforts were rewarded when Heng picked up the ball midway inside Prime’s half. The wing wizard drove towards goal before firing home from 25 yards, his shot flying into the bottom left-hand corner to bring the home side level.
Both teams continued to search for a winner. Prime went close with a header from a corner that rattled the crossbar, while Futera always looked dangerous, the pace of their front three posing a constant threat. With neither side able to find a decisive goal, the match ended in an entertaining 1–1 draw, with Futera bringing an end to Prime’s five-game winning streak.
With Champ and Khun both unable to start, I feared something of a Valentine’s Day massacre as our young midfield took to the field. Fair play to young Dew, who put in a solid performance, as did Beem. Once again, the back four were outstanding, with Bas showing what a true leader he is.
I believe one more win would all but secure survival in this division, allowing us to look forward to next season and begin rebuilding. We have the nucleus of a very good side, and a few additions should see us competing towards the top of the table next year.
Our next fixture is away to a Singburi Warriors side who, like ourselves, have improved in the second half of the season. It will be a tough game, but I feel we have the players to take all three points. Futera SuSu.
