The last game before the mid-season break ended in a narrow defeat for Futera United, as defensive errors allowed the home side to come from behind and take all three points in an entertaining contest at Angthong Stadium.

A combination of suspensions and injuries had decimated the Futera squad, leaving an extremely young side to face their more experienced opponents. The opening half-hour was cagey, with the home team enjoying the lion’s share of possession, while Futera posed a constant threat on the break thanks to the pace of Heng and Pup.

In the 39th minute, a strong run out from the back by Tsubasa saw him play the ball into Heng before continuing his surge forward. Heng’s intelligent return pass picked out the talented Japanese midfielder, whose fierce angled drive beat the home keeper at his near post to give Futera a 1–0 lead. Angthong stormed back, first going close with a sublime 30-yard free-kick that cannoned off the bar, before their left-winger jinked inside and fired a shot across the face of goal that drifted narrowly wide.

Angthong started the second half strongly, going close from a corner inside two minutes before Film produced what will surely be a save-of-the-season contender, diving acrobatically to make an outstanding one-handed stop from a close-range header. After withstanding Angthong’s early onslaught, Futera began to grow into the game. Phu went close with a strike from the edge of the box, while the much-improved Basbu, who had an excellent game, unleashed a sublime curling free-kick that beat the goalkeeper but drifted inches wide.

Heartache struck for the away side in the 71st minute when substitutes Dew and Bank got themselves in a tangle from a long throw, allowing the Angthong number 29 a clean sight of goal. His low effort nestled in the bottom corner to make it 1–1. Worse followed just two minutes later when a strong run and cross from the Angthong winger was met by a powerful downward header that was adjudged to have struck the arm of skipper Bas, resulting in a penalty for the home side. Film guessed correctly from the spot but was unable to keep the effort out, and Angthong had turned the game on its head to lead 2–1.

Credit to Futera, who continued to search for a way back into the game. They went close when Dew produced an excellent driving run, only for his dangerous cross to be fortuitously deflected over by the Angthong centre-back’s last-ditch challenge. Despite a valiant effort from the young Futera side, the referee blew for full time with the score 2–1 to Angthong FC.

Another narrow defeat leaves Futera third from bottom, with plenty of work to do during the mid-season break. The arrival of centre-forward Save should provide a major boost, but the biggest concern remains the midfield area. We have tried numerous players in these roles, yet still seem no closer to identifying our best pairing. It is imperative that we make the right signing in this window, we need strength, composure, and experience to support our talented youngsters.

After ten games, it is becoming clear which players are not at the required level. On a positive note, Heng and Drew have been outstanding all season, Phu has returned to form, and Ton delivered a strong display today alongside the ever-reliable Bas. Special mention must go to Film, whose performances have been exceptional, his save today was simply unbelievable.

It is a huge window ahead for Futera, but after securing our first win against Saraburi there is plenty to look forward to. It is clear this is the level we want to be competing at, and we must all do everything we can to ensure we stay in this division.

Futera Susu.
